Problems with Your Software?
----------------------------
If you are having a problem installing or using your software, we want to
help.
o First, please make sure you have read thoroughly the Installation and
System Requirements sections above.
If you have followed the directions and are still having trouble installing
or operating the software, below are some hints that might help solve the
problem.
Note: Before attempting any of the following suggestions, please make sure
you are familiar with the Windows(r) commands being used. Consult your
Windows(r) documentation for more information.
CD Problems
-----------
A quadruple-speed CD-ROM drive is required to run FIFA Soccer Manager.
Receive "File not found" error message when installing or running the game
o Make sure that the CD is in the CD drive. The CD must be in the drive to
install or run the game.
o Make sure the game was properly installed. See Installation .
o Ensure that you are using 32-bit native Windows(r) 95 drivers to control
your CD-ROM drive. These drivers can be configured from the System Control
Panel.
o Do not use a DOS-based 16-bit driver (loaded in CONFIG.SYS) to control
your CD-ROM. Performance may be significantly reduced.
Video Problems
--------------
Choppy or stuttering video or audio problems may be improved by adjusting
the CD-ROM read-ahead cache.
To adjust the read-ahead cache:
1. At the Windows(r) 95 desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, then
choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
2. Click the Performance tab, then click File System...
3. Click the CD-ROM tab, then click in the Optimise access pattern for:
box, and choose DOUBLE-SPEED OR HIGHER.
4. Move the Supplemental cache size: slider to SMALL, then click Apply.
Note: Moving the slider to LARGE will not improve FIFA Soccer Manager
performance, and may actually hinder performance by reserving RAM that
would otherwise be available for the game.
Sound Problems
--------------
o Make sure you installed the correct Windows(r) 95 drivers for your sound
card. (Refer to the sound card documentation provided by the
manufacturer.)
o If you ever replace your existing sound card with a different one,
follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation. Once you have
verified that the sound card works properly under Windows(r) 95, run the
game again; it should be automatically detected.
o Slower CD-ROM drives may cause audio to stutter between menu screens.
o FIFA Soccer Manager requires a sound card that is supported by DirectX.
(To determine if your sound card is supported by DirectX, follow the steps
under Hardware Compatibility .)
o If your sound card does not have DirectX support, you may experience
delayed audio, audio breakup, or no audio. Please contact your sound card
manufacturer for updated drivers.
Gravis Ultrasound Users
-----------------------
If you have a Gravis Ultrasound Classic audio card and experience problems
with video or audio playback, try setting the Playback DMA buffer size to
at least 4096.
To adjust the Playback DMA buffer size:
1. Click on the Start button from the Taskbar. The Start menu opens.
2. From the Start menu, highlight Settings, and then select Control Panel
from the pop-up menu.
3. From the Control Panel, choose the System icon, then click the Device
Manager tab.
4. Select the Sound, Video, and Game Controller option, then highlight
GRAVIS ULTRASOUND CLASSIC, and click Properties.
5. Click the Ultrasound Setup tab, then set the Playback DMA Buffer Size
option to at least 4096.
Gameplay Performance Problems
-----------------------------
o For maximum performance, ensure that no other Windows(r) 95 applications
are running. Check the Windows(r) 95 Taskbar and close any currently
running programs.
Memory Problems
---------------
FIFA Soccer Manager requires 16 MB RAM and Virtual Memory ENABLED.
We advise that you permit Windows(r) 95 to manage the amount of virtual
memory automatically, and that you have at least 20 MB free hard disk space
after installation.
If you have virtual memory DISABLED, you will need additional RAM in your
machine to compensate.

team of your choice. To proceed, left-click on the Next screen toggle. Your
chosen club is now in the division you selected on the previous League
Menu. Your starting bank balance depends upon the League.
Status Bar
----------
The Status Bar is present on all of the menus in FIFA Soccer Manager and
gives you the date, your bank balance, your next opponent and the next
match date. In addition it displays the game type; League, Cup tie or
European Cup tie.
The current menu type is displayed in the top left of the bar. Below the
Status bar is the Main Options Bar.
Main Options Bar
----------------
This bar appears on each of FIFA Soccer Manager's four main menus and
allows you to move between the menus easily. The four menus are as
follows:
o Squad Menu; to manage the make-up, strategy and training of your
football team.
o Facilities Menu; to manage and make improvements to your stadium
and pitch.
o Finance Menu; to keep track of your income and outgoings related to
the whole business of running a football club.
o Events Organiser; fixtures, results, tables, the trophy cupboard,
an in-depth analysis graph, and the Match Report screen.
4. SQUAD MENUS FUNCTION BAR
------------------------
Team Selection
--------------
You have a choice of five sub menus to fine tune your team and get a
result. You have to pay close attention to all aspects of the modern game
if you are to gain the ultimate accolade - the League championship. The
five squad menus are:
Formation
---------
This displays your whole squads' statistics. It is invaluable to you in
your new job as a top football manager. You're able to gauge individual
morale, player form and fatigue allowing you to make the best use of your
valuable resources.
Player Statistics
-----------------
This reveals a comprehensive list of individual players attributes in
tabular form. It is essential in allowing you to individually tailor a
training regime for each player in your team and improving weak areas.
Style
-----
Allows you to control each individual players' style to create a homogenous
and workman-like footballing entity.
Orders
------
These are instructions you give to the team as a whole.
Biasing Editor
--------------
Here you can influence the frequency with which your players receive the
ball via the passing bias. The higher the number, the more they will
receive the ball. You can set up three different variable zones on the park
for attack, midfield and defence.
Training
--------
The Training menu is divided into Training Set-up and Stats. Training
Set-up allows you to allocate different types of training, physiotherapist
sessions and rest days to your squad to keep them in tip-top condition. The
Stats or statistics sub menu allows you to see your players' strong points
and define which areas could be improved. This sub menu is identical to the
Stats Menu in the Team Selection (refer to that section for details).
Training Set-up
---------------
By Player
To give an individual player a weeks' training, move the cursor so a
particular player's name is highlighted in orange then left-click and hold;
this reveals the training bar (see below). Highlight the training option
you wish that player to concentrate on this week. When you have chosen the
option release the left mouse button to select it. The player's whole
time-table is filled with your choice.
By Day
To set the whole squad's training for a particular day move the cursor so
the desired day is highlighted in orange then left-click and hold. This
reveals the training bar (see below) and then you can highlight whichever
option you wish the squad to concentrate on for that day. When you have
chosen the training option release the left mouse button to select it.
By Slot
Though the two methods above allow you to fill your squad's training
schedule quickly you may want to personalise your squad training plan by
individual slot, which enables you to direct your players' training efforts
towards their weaknesses.
To select a slot, move the cursor over the slot to highlight it. Left-click
and hold. The training bar appears and you can then select your choice by
highlighting it. Release the left mouse button and your chosen slot is
filled with your training bar selection.
Default Training Set-up
The Default training Set-up is initiated at the start of each season and
does not alter.
Transfer
--------
As contracts expire and players pick up injuries you find that you want to
enter the transfer market. Since you are running a football club your
players are essentially your most valuable assets so selling a player to
raise funds may also be necessary. If you plan to rise from the lower
reaches of professional football then keeping an eye on the transfer market
is essential since big bucks aren't something that you can get your hands
on easily.
Buy Player (Not available in demo)
----------
Player search
This feature allows you to take all the work out of finding likely
candidates for your team. You have six filters to narrow your selection
down; one of these is a name search if you have your heart set on a
particular player. This feature is best used in the All players category as
the search is the widest possible. The six filters are:
Name: If you know the name of the player you want to sign, left-click on
the Name toggle and an asterisk appears in the box alongside. Move the
cursor so the asterisk is highlighted orange and left-click. This turns the
asterisk red and allows you to type in up to five characters of the name of
your choice. Hit Return and the Player Search Engine displays all players
which best meet your requirements.
Position: When you have a particular role that needs filling using
the Position filter allows you to cut out all the players in other
positions. Left-click the Position toggle and it changes from a cross to a
tick. Now move the cursor to highlight the position in orange and then
left-click and hold. A positions bar appears; to highlight the desired
position you wish to search for, scroll down and release the left mouse
button. The search engine subsequently displays all of the players in that
position.
Value: Allows you to define a price range for the player you. Left-click
on the Value toggle and then move the cursor to highlight the default
value. Left-click and hold and the choice of price ranges appears. Select
the price range you want by highlighting it and then release the left mouse
button. All the players who fall within your price range are displayed.
Age: To sign players of a particular age group you can utilise the Age
filter. Left-click on the Age toggle and then highlight the default age
range (15-24), left-click, hold and then highlight your desired age range
and release. All players in your chosen age range are then displayed.
Nationality: If you want an Italian mid-field maestro to wow the fans
you can use the Nationality filter. Left-click on the Nationality toggle
and then move the cursor to highlight the default Nationality (British).
Left-click, hold and highlight the Nationality you wish to select, then
release the left mouse button.
Stats: This allows you to select players on their position statistic.
Left-click on the Stats toggle and then highlight the default Stat range
(50-59). Left-click, hold and highlight the desired Stat range. To select
this stat range release the left mouse button. Players whose position Stats
fall within the chosen stat range are now displayed.
Of course you could select players using just one of these filters but in
practice it's probably more useful to use a few to narrow down the search.
Sell Player (Not available in demo)
-----------
Player Information
The Player information screen allows you to take a look at the progress of
the players in your squad:
On the left your squad is listed with arrow toggles that allow you to
scroll up and down. To the right, the following information on the default
(first) player is displayed: Position, shirt number, name, nationality,
age, transfer value, wages, number of cards received (red and yellow),
current form stat, Position average, goals scored, morale stat and man of
the match awards received.
Simply move the cursor so the player whose details you wish to see is
highlighted in orange and then left-click. The highlighted player's name
turns red and his details are displayed on the right.
Squad Analysis (Not available in demo)
--------------
6. FACILITIES MENUS
----------------
A poorly kept pitch can make skillful football difficult and even bar you
from playing home fixtures. Your stadium may need improvements as you climb
out of obscurity or you may just want to have a look at your stadium from
the air. The Facilities menus are where you should head if you want to
address any of these aspects of your role.
Pitch Maintenance
-----------------
If you neglect your pitch the standard of play suffers and you may even may
find matches being cancelled by FIFA. The loss of club prestige, not to
mention revenue, is not the sort of thing that most club chairmen look
kindly upon so ensuring that you keep your park in prime condition should
not be overlooked.
To enter the pitch maintenance menu
Move the cursor to the Facilities menu function bar and left-click on the
Pitch Maintenance toggle; this takes you to the Pitch Maintenance menu.
On the left of the screen are five headings: Pitch Condition, Weekly
Payment, One-off Payment, Good Condition and Unacceptable Condition. Each
of these, excluding One-off payment, has a colour key adjacent.
Pitch Condition
---------------
This is plotted in pink on the graph and fluctuates depending upon the
amount of money you invest in pitch maintenance, the use the pitch receives
and the time of year.
Weekly Payment
--------------
Set the level of expenditure on pitch maintenance each week here. The
default setting is £300, generally enough to keep the pitch in acceptable
condition. To change this figure highlight with the cursor and then
left-click. The figure turns from orange to red and you can now adjust the
amount using the keyboard.
One-off Payment
---------------
If your pitch has fallen in to a state of utter disrepair then a quick
injection of cash may save a threatened home fixture. To make a one-off
payment move the cursor so the default figure (£0) is highlighted in orange
then left-click. The figure turns red and you can now adjust the amount
using the keyboard.
Good Condition
--------------
The green bar at the top of the graph shows the level at which the pitch is
adjudged to be in fine condition creating the ideal environment for
world-class football.
Unacceptable Condition
----------------------
The red bar at the bottom of the graph indicates the level at which the
pitch is of such a poor quality that home fixtures are cancelled. This
causes loss of revenue from ticket sales and should be avoided at all
costs.
The graph charts your pitch maintenance progress throughout the season
allowing you to learn the level of expenditure that best suits your pitch.
Stadium (Not available in demo)
-------
The Stadium menu allows you to make improvements to your buildings or
simply take a bird's eye view of your ground. The increased revenue that
can be earned from multi-tiered stadium seating should not be
underestimated. However, the cost of stadium improvements can be
prohibitive and remember that, if you secure a loan, there are interest
payments to be met.
Note: Any terraced areas cannot be used for Premiership games.
To enter the Stadium menu
Move the cursor to the Facilities menu function bar and left-click on the
Stadium toggle; this takes you to the Stadium menu.
On the left is a blueprint of your stadium and below this are three
choices, Build, Expand and Buy Land There is a viewing window in the centre
of the screen which allows you to see the individual stands of the stadium
while on the right are the building details for any improvement schemes you
decide on.
To View Stadium (Not available in demo)
To build a new stand (Not available in demo)
The Figures
-----------
The price, building duration and other details vary depending upon your
choice. Here is a run-down of the different categories:
Duration Details the number of weeks your building project takes.
Your gate receipts are going to fall in the short term
while the capacity of your stadium is reduced.
Quantity The number of stands you plan to build/upgrade.
Per Roof The price, in pounds, of each roof of your stands.
Seat Capacity Displays the number and type of seat (or terrace) in your
proposed stands.
Per Stand The price, in pounds, of each stand.
Sub-total Details the cost of building minus the cost of demolition
and without any adjustment due to discounts accrued on
large-scale projects.
Demolition The cost of making the site ready for construction,
including removal of debris.
Build The cost of the building project without any discounts (if
applicable).
Discount As a large construction project is a highly profitable
undertaking, fierce competition between construction
companies is to be expected. If you build four or more
stands you receive a discount.
Total This is the total price of the work. When you left-click on
the Build toggle, this is the amount your account is debited.
To Expand (Not available in demo)
To Buy Land (Not available in demo)
7. FINANCE MENUS
-------------
If you only concentrate on your team's training you may find yourself out
of a job, as financial flair is as much as part of your job as on-the-park
finesse. You can review your income and overheads, set ticket and
merchandise prices, take out bank loans and review player contracts on the
Finance menus.
Assets
------
The wheeling and dealing of the transfer market could reap dividends so
juggling your assets may be the only way for you to drag a club from
obscurity to the heady heights of Europe's premier leagues.
Balance Sheet
-------------
The first sub-menu you see when you enter the Finance section of the game
is your Club's balance sheet. This is laid out clearly so you can keep tabs
on expenses and the all important profit total.
Club Assets
-----------
This menu displays your assets in terms of Cash available, Player Assets,
Building Assets and any Loans you may have taken out. A Total figure for
all your assets is also given.
Player Assets
-------------
The Player Assets sub menu allows you to look at your whole squad
displaying their Original Value when they joined your club and their
Current Value. The change in their value, if any, is also detailed in the
Change column. + represents an increase in value whilst - represents a
decline in their value.
Tickets
-------
The Tickets sub menu allows you to adjust the ticket allocations to home
and away fans as well as change ticket prices. Reducing prices may increase
the numbers of fans flocking to your club's ground each week but it might
not pay the bills. You alone can decide what is best for the club.
To change ticket allocations
Move the cursor to highlight the figure you want to change and then
left-click. Now you may alter the allocation using the keyboard (up to the
total number of seats in that section). Don't worry about altering the
respective home or away allocation as this changes automatically.
To change ticket prices
Move the cursor so the figure you wish to alter is highlighted orange and
then left-click. Use the keyboard to change the price. Unlike ticket
allocation each price is independent of all the others (i.e. if you change
the price of Select seating for Home supporters, the price of Away
supporters' Select seating remains unaltered).
Note: Depending upon your club's stadium, some of the ticket types may
not be available.
Merchandise (Not available in demo)
-----------
Loans (Not available in demo)
-----
Contracts (Not available in demo )
---------
The Contracts menus allow you to check both your players' contracts and the
contracts you have with your concessionaires. You may change a player's
wage and the length of their contract to make sure you're never caught on
the hop with large numbers of players looking to transfer. In addition,
when a concessionaire's lease runs out you may decide to install a
different concession, giving you the ability to maximise rents earned by
the club.
Players
-------
Use the arrows at the top and bottom of the table to scroll to the player
whose contract details you wish to view. If you wish to alter a player's
wage or length of contract (not available in demo).
Concessions (Not available in demo)
-----------
Analysis (Not available in demo)

domestic and cup fixtures for the coming season appears. Below this is the
list title which, to start with, reads All (i.e. All fixtures).
To select a Fixtures list
If you wish to view one of the other, more specific, fixtures lists move
your cursor so that 'All' is highlighted orange then left-click and hold. A

the Nationality of your club.):

o Premiership
o English Cup

Move the cursor to the desired fixture list and then release the left mouse
button. The selected fixtures list is displayed.

o English Cup
o League Cup
o Challenge Shield
o Scotland
o Scottish Cup
o League Cup
Select the cup ties you want to view by moving the cursor to the desired
cup. Release the left mouse button and your chosen cup tie appears.
To View another domestic league
If you wish to view another domestic league move the cursor to highlight

cursor so that the division you want to view is highlighted orange and
release the left mouse button. Your selected league table appears.

---------------
Analysis (Not available in demo)
--------
Match Report
------------
This sub-menu gives you a break down of Possession, Territory, game and
player statistics pertaining to the last match played. To enter the three
sub menus left-click on the relevant toggle.
Team Information
----------------
This table gives a break down of the run of play, detailing the number of
Corners, Offside rulings, Fouls, Shots and Shots On Target. In addition,
Possession is displayed on a two-toned percentage gauge. Each coloured
portion of the gauge relates to your own, or the opposition's, time in
possession of the ball. The Territory percentage gauge operates in a
similar way; a 50% split indicates that equal periods of time were spent in
each half of the pitch.
Scorers
-------
Details both the overall scoreline and the individuals who scored, along
with the time that the goal was put away.
Player (Information)
------
This table breaks down a selection of match and player statistics by
individual. You can view the opposing club's stats too, with a left-click
on the Opposition Player information Toggle.

You may elect to save a replay of the match. If so, click on the Save
Replay icon which will save a perfect copy on your hard drive of your last
match. To access the replay, go to Fixtures in the Events Organiser section
of the game, and click on the smaller version of the Save Replay icon next
to the fixture.
10. MATCH ENGINES
-------------
Now you're clear about all the features of the various menus, you can enter
FIFA Soccer Manager's exclusive match engine too see how that new formation
is working and whether the long ball game is effective against your
opponents.
You have a choice of two match engines. Both calculate the result in the
same way, however, one shows a match simulation whilst the other takes you
immediately to the Results tables. It's up to you to decide which route to
take, although the instant match result engine doesn't allow you to make
substitutions or change your team orders and tactics.
Play Next Match (Not available in demo)
---------------
The Match Simulation Engine allows you to watch your team playing their
fixtures, enabling you to check whether all your tactical input and
training is paying off. You can make changes to your Formation, Style,
Orders and Biasing using the Match Day Options Bar at the bottom of the
match screen.(see Match Day Options Bar below). From here you may also

other leagues in the country, and all the cups. If you're using the match
engine, the results of matches that took place earlier in the week are
shown before your game is played. Otherwise the earlier games are shown,
followed by the results of all the domestic fixtures. The result of your
club's fixture is highlighted in red. After you've finished viewing them,
left-click on the Next screen toggle to proceed.
To view the results of other divisions
Move the cursor to highlight your division and then left-click and hold;
this opens a small pop-up window. Select the division you want and then
release the left mouse button. The desired division is displayed.
To view the results of cups
Above the division selector is the League/Cup selector toggle. Left-click
on this to switch between the two. As with division selection, left-click
and hold and scroll down the window before you release the left mouse
button. The desired cup screen is displayed.
When you have finished viewing the Results menus, left-click on the Next
Screen toggle to go to the Tables Menu (see below).
13. TABLES MENU
-----------
The Tables menu shows the club standings in the division. Your position is
highlighted in red.
To view other division tables
Move the cursor so that your club's division is highlighted orange in the
bottom left-hand corner of the screen then left-click and hold. A small
window with choices of divisions appears; move the cursor to highlight the
one you want and release the left-mouse button.
To view Cup knockout competitions
Left-click on the League/Cups selector toggle. This takes you to the
European Champions League Cup (ECLC) knockout list. To view other cups move
the cursor to highlight the abbreviation below (ECLC). Left-click and hold
and a window appears with your choices (depending on the National League
your club is in). Next, move the cursor to highlight your desired Cup
competition and release the left mouse button. The chosen Knockout list
appears.
14. MESSAGES MENU
-------------
The Messages menu gives you information pertaining to gate receipts,
merchandise sales, as well as alerting you to any change in your club's
status such as an injury to a player or a building grant from the local
council. You should not neglect to read these messages as failure to act
upon them could see your tenure as the club's manager end prematurely. You
soon learn that the manager's job is the toughest one in football.
